The importance of hair density in hair transplantation

Hair density, is one of the most important factors influencing the success of a hair transplant. The hair density concept is used to decide when a hair transplant should be performed, whether a hair transplant will be successful and in which areas a hair transplant should be performed. What is hair density?

What is hair density?

Hair density and quality varies from person to person.

Density is known to be the amount of mass in a volume unit. From this point of view, hair density is the number / amount of each hair root per cm² in the hairy area.

In an adult, hair density varies depending on various factors with an average of 200 to 600 strands per cm². We can call this the average hair density in adults.

There are many different factors that influence hair density. These can be hair colour, hair strand structure, which is one of the characteristics at birth, and a number of secondary effects that can change hair density. It varies according to age, gender, race or genetic structure.

Hair density is very effective and important in determining the extent and rate of hair loss and in determining the planning of hair transplantation before the transplantation. It is very important to calculate the hair density before application.

The calculation of the hair density

The problem of sparse hair has a negative effect on the psychology of a person

Hair density calculation used to be done by hand, tape measure and ruler-like instruments and by counting individual hair roots. Today, it can be controlled by computerized robots and special medical equipment to quickly calculate the hair density. To calculate hair density, you need to know the number of hairs per cm².

The hair density calculation is done by calculating the hair root per square centimeter.

The hair roots created at birth are about 1000 hairs per square centimeter for a young person. With increasing age, this number can drop to 600 per square centimeter. In the 30s, it is considered normal for a person’s hair density to be between 200 and 600 strands.

How does hair density affect hair transplantation?

The hair density calculated during the preoperative examination in hair transplant centres is a feature that directly influences the hair transplant process. So what is its effect?

  • Hair transplants, which can technically be carried out on all age groups, wait for a certain decrease in hair density. With the completion of hair loss, the density of the hair falls to a large extent below a certain level. In this way, since the hair loss is already completed during the transplantation, the possibly occurring bad image is prevented. This is because if a hair transplantation is performed while the hair loss continues, a bad appearance will occur because the hair loss will continue during this process. Therefore, the hair density calculation directly affects the date of the hair transplant.
  • The effect of the donor area on hair transplant operations is another factor that influences the success of hair density. Hair transplants are performed with hair roots from the neck, which is an area where hair loss is less common. The low density of the hair roots in the neck area can affect the success of hair transplants. The main reason why hair transplantation does not show the same success for every person is the hair density in the donor area. Hair transplantation in people with a small amount of hair in the donor area may not produce the expected result. Such situations are eliminated by correctly determining one’s own expectations and possibilities. During the examination to be carried out before hair transplantation, the hair density in the donor area is calculated and the number of hair roots needed in the bald area is determined. Immediately afterwards, the planning of the hair transplantation is carried out.
  • Hair planning determines how the maximum amount of hair roots from the donor area will be distributed in the bald area. After calculating the hair density and planning the hair transplantation, it is roughly determined how the person will look like after the operation.

  • The most important factor that influences hair density is the genetic structure.
  • The density of hair can change depending on the characteristics associated with birth. According to the researches, it is understood that red-haired people have a lower hair density than blondes.
  • Another factor that influences hair density is gender. Hormonal differences may not affect hair density from birth, but they do affect it later. Hair loss and decrease in density are more common in men. Two different types of androgen, the male hormone, cause more hair loss in men. Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, one of the androgen hormones, can block androgen receptors in the hair roots. This condition causes the hair root to shrink and the hair in the male head area becomes thinner and weakened.
  • A significant decrease in intensity is a condition that affects people psychologically and socially. Environmental effects can also lead to hair loss. Excessive stress, malnutrition and various diseases are among the factors that influence the decrease in hair density.
  • Another genetic factor that influences hair density is race. Hair density can also vary depending on the breed. The hair types are divided into 3:
    • Straight ”Asian Hair Type”,
    • ”Afro-Carabbean hair type” with wavy and curly hair
    • It is a ”Caucasian hair type”, which consists of a mixture of the characteristics of both hair types.

The breed with the lowest density of hair is Afro-carabiner, which is not really thought. This hair type, usually curly and black, contains between 50,000 and 100,000 strands. The Caucasian hair type is the one with the highest density. According to the general average, this hair type contains an average of 150,000 strands of hair.

Another important factor for the success of hair transplants are the grafts.
