FUE hair transplantation

FUE hair transplantation

FUE hair transplantation (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a hair transplantation method that has been used since 2002 and in which the hair roots in the neck area are collected individually without linear incision. In grafts with small punching points, small incisions are made around the follicular unit and the hair roots are collected individually in the in vivo procedure and transplanted into the bald area.

Additional information about FUE hair transplantation

After FUE hair transplantation was accepted by exception in the literature, there was a significant increase in hair transplant operations.

With the FUE method, which is much more comfortable compared to the previous methods, there is no need to suture during the hair transplantation process, as there is no incision in the donor area and thus no permanent scarring is created.

Furthermore, FUE hair transplantation allowed the use of different body parts as donor area for hair transplantation.

What is FUE?

Over the last 25 years, there have been significant developments in the field of hair transplantation, the most important of which is FUE hair transplantation, which has enabled hair transplantation to spread worldwide and has made hair transplantation more popular. FUE (Folliculair Unit Extraction), which was introduced into the literature in 2002, offered a very important advantage in that it allowed for hair transplantation without cuts, sutures or scars. As a result, natural and scarless hair transplantation has become a preferred solution for hair loss worldwide.

The FUE hair transplantation was created from the abbreviation of the word follicular unit extraction. In 1990, the concept of “follicular unit” was discovered, where the hair root grows and nourishes itself. This meant that the hair root with its nests could be transported and transplanted, and soon began to be transplanted quickly and conveniently using the FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method, but this method also had a significant disadvantage. With the FUT method, it left a permanent suture 15 to 20 cm wide in the neck area.

Advantages of the FUE hair transplantation method

It has many advantages, which are different from FUE hair transplantation, compared to the FUT method, which is an older method than it is. The FUE method has important advantages over the FUT hair transplantation, which is the previous hair transplantation method. In both methods, the hair root collection methods differ from each other. In the FUT method, a two finger wide incision is made in the neck area and the skin is removed here from the place where it is taken out and sutured like an adhesive tape with the hair roots. Later, the hair roots taken from the skin are prepared for the Fue hair transplant.

The FUE hair transplantation method is used without the need for incisions or sutures. The hair roots are removed with tiny movements from the area where they are located, so that no scars are created.

Let’s take a look at the differences, advantages and disadvantages of FUE hair transplantation…

Advantages of FUE hair transplantation

  • FUE hair transplantation is the most commonly used hair transplantation method worldwide.
  • In FUE hair transplantation, healthy and strong hair roots are selected one after the other.
  • The donor area heals much faster when transplanted with the FUE method.
  • No scars remain after the operation.
  • Thanks to the FUE method, hair roots from different parts of the body can also be used for transplantation.
  • With FUE hair transplantation, the hair roots can be collected individually.
  • With the FUE hair transplantation method, the hair roots in the surrounding area are not damaged.
  • The FUE technique can be used in conjunction with the DHI technique, known as the pin technique, which we have heard about more often in recent years.

Depending on the thickness and structure of the hair, much smaller cavities than a needle head are formed around the hair roots, and the hair root is removed together with the follicular unit of the hair root, whereby the individually removed hair roots allow the donor area to heal quickly. Nowadays, many hair transplantation methods (robotics, DHI, micromotor, etc.), which are offered under various names, are based on the FUE hair transplantation method as a basic principle of application.

It is very important that you have some information about the hair transplant methods recommended by your doctor in order to understand which methods are used in your hair transplant surgery, which takes 4 to 8 hours, and what happens during the procedure.

Hair transplantation consists of 3 basic stages.

1. the collection of hair roots (FUE method)

2. the opening of channels (percutaneous, dhi, sagittal, etc. methods)

3. the transplantation of the hair root

The FUE method is a method for collecting hair roots. The robotic hair transplantation application, as we often call it today, is a method of collecting hair roots with the FUE method using a computer-assisted robot.

While in the early years, the FUE method was performed with a device called a hand punch, in recent years it has been performed with the help of a medical device called a micromotor. For this reason, the same method may appear in some sources as “micromotor FUE”.

Before the FUE hair transplant

It is recommended to do research on hair transplantation and hair transplantation methods before you decide on hair transplantation with the FUE method, which is so effective that hair transplantation can be used as a worldwide common and problem-free method. In this sense, you can ask your doctor your open questions. Before the hair transplantation, the patient undergoes a blood test. If the patient is diagnosed with various diseases such as local diabetes, blood pressure, hepatitis or HIV virus, the procedure will be decided according to the type of disease.

In the case of diabetes, which is under control, a decision on hair transplantation is made after the necessary examinations have been carried out, while in the case of other diseases such as HIV or hepatitis, the operation can be aborted by the doctor’s decision.

Operation phases with FUE hair transplantation

The collection of the hair root with the FUE hair transplantation

At first, hair roots are collected from the neck area. During this process, the hair roots are loosened one after the other with a special medical product. Then the loosened hair roots are collected as grafts. In each graft there can be between 3 and 8 strands. The density of the grafts is a factor that increases the quality and success of the hair transplant. This process varies depending on the number of grafts and takes between 2 and 4 hours. For a comfortable operation, a local anaesthetic is used.

Opening the channels with the FUE hair transplant

After the hair roots are collected, the nurses sort them and place them properly on a bandage and prepare them for transplantation.

The area where the hair root is collected is bandaged against the possibility of catching germs after the collection of the grafts is completed. After this procedure, the patient is placed on his back. In order to open the channels with FUE hair transplant, the area to be transplanted is anaesthetised under local anaesthetic. Then the channel opening process is started. The canal opening process is performed with a sharp tool called a micro-pen. These channels are smaller than the tip of a needle and the transplanted hair roots are placed in these channels. It is very important that the directions, depth and width of the channels harmonize with the hair roots.

The fact that the channel directions are proportional to other hair roots is the most important point that influences the success and naturalness of hair transplantation.

The channel opening process is adjusted according to the area to be transplanted. In FUE hair transplant planning, it is calculated in advance how many hair roots will be transplanted to which area. While the canal opening process should be performed at right angles in the upper areas, if it goes towards the temples, it should be performed at a narrower angle according to the natural structure of the hair.

The process of opening the channel is very important because it influences the formation of the hair growing upright everywhere in the form of a grassman or the formation of a completely natural appearance. This is where the dexterity and experience of the doctor comes into play.

Hair root transplantation with the FUE hair transplantation

The final phase of Fue hair transplantation consists of transplanting the hair root into the opened channels. The hair roots, which are properly stored in special boxes after collection, are removed one by one and placed in the opened channels.

“The collected hair roots should not be stored for long periods of time and should not be damaged when placed in the channels”.

The hair transplantation process can take 2 to 4 hours, depending on the number of grafts to be transplanted. Once the process is complete, the area where a Fue hair transplant is performed is not covered or wrapped. It is left open to air. The hair transplantation area should be protected from any pressure or impact.

The first dressing change after hair transplantation using the FUE method is performed a few days after the hair transplantation. With this method there is no cut or suture. But during the collection of the hair root, wounds in the form of dots on the skin are opened. These wounds heal in about 1 week. It takes 10 – 12 months until the transplanted hair is completely natural.
